Introduction

There is music in air and pride in our hearts, as we approach the republic day, a day when we gained our identity and when we presented ourselves with our constitution. Its time to look back and muse on how much we acheived and how much is still left.

Having made a side-door entry into the world of India’s biggest obsession, ‘Bollywood Bandwagon’ stands on the edge of a film set watching the goings-on – WITHOUT any colored glasses! But being a true-blue voyeur, gradually the play makes its way into the more intimate spaces of the industry - some secret, some forgotten, some taken for granted. And the further inside it goes, the farther away it gets from the shiny veneer; Until the magical becomes mundane and the people inside look the same as the ones outside.

Previous Issues

I am writing this just after coming to India ten days ago.  I am still such a novice and such an infant in many ways—in Hindi, in navigating the city, even in operating my simple prepaid cell phone.  And yet still even after such a brief period of time and in the midst of rapid
transition, I can say with certainty that that the time I will spend here will be markedly different than my past journeys outside of the States, and I have a deep feeling that this time will both profoun and enriching.

The theatre we were performing in was located in Hafenhalle, the port area of Linz city. It had been built in only 2 weeks exclusively for the ’09 Festival. Right next to the Danube. By ‘exclusively’, I mean literally no one other than the festival invitees will ever perform in that beautiful space again. Come 2010, the entire building with its 2 theatres, perfectly designed to make possible all kinds of mad experiments; state-of-the-art technical rooms; an office; store rooms; workshop rooms; lounging area; rooms to construct your sets in; rooms to stitch your costumes in; green rooms that you want to build your home in; a bar and café while you wait for the show to start – will all be turned into cold storage! Fresh fish caught from the Danube will be frozen there till wholesale!
